Common Host Family Complaints

These are the most common complaints from Host Families.

Always remember that even though you are staying in someone's home, you are not a guest but are considered part of the family and must act accordingly.

Everyone is expected to help out around the home.

※ If you find that the relationship between you and your Host Family has changed (they seem angry etc.), and you feel some tension we suggest you check the list below to make sure you are doing everything right. If you are still not sure we suggest asking them "Am I doing anything wrong? Is there anything I can change or do differently around the home?" This takes a lot of courage to ask, but your Host Family will appreciate it and your relationship should improve.

1) If you drop something, pick it up.

(Rubbish on the floor, clothing, hair in the bathroom etc.)

2) If you use something, replenish it.

(Water from the water jug, ice from the freezer etc.)

3) Do not leave your washing in the washing machine/dryer.

(Take out the washing as soon as it is finished)

4) Do not brush your teeth or shave in the shower.

(Water in Australia is costly)

5) If you have the air conditioner on and you get cold, turn it off. Don't keep it on and get under the blankets or put a jumper on.

(This is a waste of money)

6) Turn off the air conditioner and open your window if it is cool outside.

(Nights in Australia can be quite cool and the air is refreshing.)

7) Close the toilet and bathroom doors when leaving the room.

(This helps keep any smells in the room, and makes it look tidy)

8) Turn off lights when leaving a room.

(Electricity is expensive)

9) If you are washing up your dishes and there are some extra ones, wash those up too.

(If everyone helps out it will make life much easier.)

10) If you turn on the air-conditioning, make sure that all the windows and doors are closed.

(All rooms should have their doors and/or windows closed.)

11) If you want to use something that belongs to someone else, get permission first.

(Shampoo, conditioner, soap, hairdryer etc.)

12) If you open it, close it.

(Doors, drawers, etc)

13) If you borrow it, return it.

(Always return to the person/spot, whatever you have borrowed.)

14) If you move it, put it back.

(Always return objects to where you took them from.)

15) If you break something fix it, or tell someone you broke it.

(Do not leave it for someone else to find)

16) If you make a mess, clean it up.

(Wipe down mench tops and put things away.)

17) Change the toilet roll if it needs changing.

(Do not leave paper on the roll and start using another one. Put the empty roll in the bin)
