Tips for finding a job

Timing

When planning to work in Australia, it's crucial to consider the season you're arriving in. Typically, there are more backpackers, students, and casual workers during the summer season compared to other times of the year. It's the perfect time to enjoy the beautiful beaches and excellent weather, and the farms are usually at their full capacity, which means there are plenty of job opportunities. However, it's not always guaranteed that there'll be enough work for everyone as there could be more job seekers than available positions.

It's worth noting that Australians also enjoy travelling around their beautiful country. During school break from December to February, students are also willing to do farm or hospitality work, reducing the number of job opportunities available. Therefore, we recommend you visit Australia between March and November and avoid the summer season.

The weather may not be as warm, but the chances of finding work are greater and you will still get to see some amazing native flora and fauna.

Volunteering

If you are struggling to find employment due to lack of experience, we highly recommend considering volunteer work, just until you find something that pays you a wage. Volunteering is a major industry in Australia and employers tend to view it very positively. Not only does it provide valuable experience, but it may also lead to paid employment if the organization where you are volunteering has job openings.

Work Experience & Study Options

While you will need to carry out specified work (farmwork, construction etc.) if you want to get your second or third-year visa, you will also have opportunities to work in other industries while you are here. With hospitality being a major employer we recommend that you have some experience before you come.

With so many people applying for jobs, it is more likely that employers will choose those with experience over those without. However, there are some things that you can do to help your chances of obtaining a job.

If you want to work in a cafe handling food you will need to obtain a Food Handling certificate and a Covid Safety course certificate. If you plan on working somewhere that provides alcohol such as a club or bar, you will need to get your RSA (Provide Responsible Service of Alcohol) certificate. All of these can be done online before you come, and your future employers will look favourably on you if you already have these. ※ Follow the links to enrol and get started.

Once you are in Australia, and if you are pursuing work in hospitality, we highly recommend doing a Barista course to learn how to make great coffee Australians are known for their love of a good cup of coffee. The basic course can be done within a day with further options for learning latte art or more advanced techniques also available. Check out our Short Study Courses page for more details.
